Microneedling at Mouth Matters

Microneedling is a treatment that harnesses your body’s own healing process to make your skin look younger and smoother, and to help give you a more even skin tone and texture. If you have areas of sun damage, hyperpigmentation or scarring, or your skin is starting to show a few wrinkles or feel slightly looser than in the past, microneedling is ideal for addressing these issues.

What is involved in the treatment?

image

Consultation

If you are interested in having microneedling, we initially see you for a detailed consultation. We discuss the treatment, ask you about your ideal results and give you the chance to ask any questions.

image

Preparation

When you come into the clinic for this treatment, we will cleanse your face before applying an anaesthetic cream to ensure that you feel as comfortable as possible during the procedure.

Treatment

We will then pass the microneedling device over your skin in a pattern of columns and rows to get the best coverage. We may need to make two or three passes over your skin, especially in areas where you have deeper lines or wrinkles.

Frequently asked questions

What is microneedling?

To perform a microneedling treatment, we pass a special device covered in tiny microscopic needles over your skin to create thousands of tiny pinprick injuries or columns within the dermis. These columns are so small that they close almost immediately, but your skin will still respond by creating new collagen and elastin to heal the area. Visible improvements to the newly healed skin continue for approximately six weeks, leaving your complexion looking smoother and clearer.

What areas can be treated?

Microneedling is ideal for addressing facial skin problems such as:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne scars
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Enlarged pores
  • Poor skin tone & texture

This treatment is also effective for tackling lines and wrinkles in the décolletage area. You may want to choose microneedling to improve the appearance of your cellulite or stretch marks on your abdomen, bottom, hips and thighs. If you suffer from alopecia, microneedling has been shown to stimulate blood flow and collagen production in your scalp, encouraging hair regrowth and good follicle health.

What is the Genuine DermaRoller?

The Genuine DermaRoller is a single-use hand-held microneedling device. As the name suggests, the microneedles sit on a small roller that we gently roll over your skin in a specific pattern to achieve full coverage and make tiny column injuries – each approximately 0.1mm in width – throughout the treatment area.

What is Raffine Automatic Microneedle Therapy?

Raffine is an automatic microneedle therapy system ideal for non-surgical and non-ablative treatment of various skin conditions such as ageing (wrinkles, stretching), scarring (acne, surgical), and hyperpigmentation. It looks like a pen and holds a single-use disposable needle cartridge that automates the depth to which the needles enter the skin.

Raffine offers a more advanced microneedling treatment than roller-type needling, and clinical studies have shown it to be more effective than ablative treatments such as laser resurfacing and dermabrasion. It is more efficient and effective for treating narrow areas such as the nose, around the eyes, or mouth, as the hand-piece allows us to approach your skin from different angles to get the best penetration. We can add a further dimension to your Raffine treatment by using it in conjunction with a mesotherapy solution.

When should I see results?

You should begin to see some positive changes to your skin approximately a week after your treatment, but the complete results won’t be seen for approximately six to eight weeks as a result of new collagen production. Most people find they need three treatments six weeks apart to experience the best outcomes. Any improvement to scarring and stretchmarks should be permanent.

Who carries out aesthetic treatments at Mouth Matters?

If you choose to have a microneedling treatment at Mouth Matters, your treatment will be carried out by Dr Gabi Tschoepe, who has extensive medical aesthetic training and is skilled at using the Genuine DermaRoller® and Raffine Automatic Microneedle Therapy System. The Mouth Matters clinic is registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and we are passionate about upholding the highest standards of care in the hands of qualified, experienced medical professionals. Microneedling has a proven safety record; it’s convenient and requires little to no recovery time.

Is microneedling safe?

Microneedling is recognised as a safe procedure because it works by stimulating the body’s own healing response and creates only microscopic injuries that close almost instantly. For this reason, the side effects of a skin-needling treatment are typically mild and self-correcting. You may experience some redness, stinging, itching and skin tightness for 24 to 48 hours post-treatment, after which the symptoms should subside. Choosing an experienced practitioner like Dr. Tschoepe who has a proven history of successful treatments is important to minimise the risk of side effects.

What should I do immediately following my treatment?

Following a microneedling treatment, we will usually advise you to avoid direct sun exposure for the next three to five days. You should also avoid wearing sunscreen or make-up for 24 hours post-treatment. We’ll give you detailed aftercare instructions when you come into the clinic so that you know what you need to do to maximise the effectiveness of your treatment.
